All of Vienna in rooms to fall in love with – Murexin reference Hotel Beethoven

Deciding on a favourite room is particularly difficult in the Hotel Beethoven in the 6th district, as all of them have a special charm. Hotel manager Barbara Ludwig and interior designer Raimund Brunmair (H. Quas GesmbH) approached the renovation of the six storeys with a great deal of sensitivity, attention to detail and to the house and dedicated each to a different theme in Vienna. During the extensive work, Murexin products were used in the bathrooms, floors and walls.

Three Murexin symphoniesin one house
“What is remarkable about this project is that products from three of our divisions, namely parquet and bonding system, tiling system and colour and coating system, were used,” says Peter Reischer (Head of Sales at Murexin GmbH), underlining the broad offering and competence of Murexin. “Of course, different trades are always used in a refurbishment project, but the fact that several of our customers have been awarded the contract for such a construction project is not an everyday occurrence,” Reischer continues. Even if not all the products of the local construction chemicals producer are visible in the finished rooms, they ensure, so to speak, that everything stays in sync above – they literally set the tone.

Composition of 80 colours
Raimund Brunmair’s colour concept deserves a special mention. With around 80 colour shades, the interior designer lent each room an individual character in addition to its unique furnishings. The managing director of Maler Schmied GmbH, Gernot Kern, who was commissioned with the execution of the concept, was keen to have a reliable supplier of wall paints at his side: “We have been working successfully with Murexin for over two decades. I particularly appreciate the excellent delivery service and the quick reactions.” In that case, this was the basis for the successful implementation: “Even if we still had colour requests in the evening, the ordered goods were on our doorstep early in the morning,” Kern emphasises the delivery reliability. The provision of the many colour shades demanded a lot not only from the local craftsmen, but also from the Murexin employees in production. “In addition to short-term tinting, an orientation aid had to be developed that helped the fabricators to use the different colours according to the concept,” is how Peter Reischer describes the internal logistics.

Working on floor, wall, ceiling
The professionals from Maler Schmied prepared the walls with Penetrating Primer VLF 10, Spray Filler Durapid XL 90, Spray Filler Gullspack S 70, Felt Coarse Filler Durapid XL 25 and Felt Fine Filler Durapid XS 40 in accordance with the standard for coating with the Interior Paint AM 2000 in 80 different colours, and for the wallpapering. For Markus Geitzenauer (site manager, Maler Schmied AG) and his team, the colour concept presented a number of challenges: “Every room was as colourful and elaborate as a small apartment. During processing washing out the brushes and rollers took up a lot of time for each colour change. With 36 rooms this effort is substantial and by no means an everyday occurrence, but it has certainly paid off if you look at the finished work.”

Puchegger used X-Bond MS-K 509 parquet adhesive for floors during preparation of the substrate and laying of the parquet floor. The dry floor (dry screed made of chipboard V 100, 16 mm thick) was double-glued with the X-Bond MSK-509. This was followed by full-surface gluing of the parquet flooring consisting of floorboards in three different widths (182 mm, 140 mm and 222 mm) from Steirer Parkett, Oak Gomera model with natural matt, oiled and waxed surface (SEDA). In total around 740 m² of floors were laid.

The tiling work included around 540 m² of wall and about 220 m² of floor area in the bathrooms of the hotel rooms. The work was carried out by Fliesen Plattig Verlegungs- und HandelsgesmbH from Hornstein. Products for levelling, such as Levelling Mortar AM 20, sealing products such as Liquid Film 2 KS or Sealing and Decoupling membrane AE 100, as well as sealing tapes and sleeves, were used for the substrate preparation. The ceramic tiles and slabs were laid with Flex Adhesive Mortar Maximo M 41 or Grey Flex Adhesive Mortar KGF 65 and grouted with Flexfuge Pro FX 65.

The time of their art. The art of their rooms.
The address at Papagenogasse 6 gives a slight hint of a possible reference to great stage and pen names and the cultural history of the city, but when you enter the building, it becomes as clear as day: here the lover of Vienna literally meets coffee-house writers, regular guests of the Vienna Salon, Beethoven and his contemporaries, of course, as well as strong women of the Fin de Siécle (end of the 19th century). “Each room tells of the references in the interior design through to the biography in spoken and written form of the life of an important historical personality,” is how Barbara Ludwig describes the concept. Each room was designed by Ludwig and Brunmair with reference to the immediate neighbourhood, such as Naschmarkt, Secession or Theater an der Wien in a unique and individual way.

“Since the high hotel rooms and wall surfaces were imagined by me as being cut up from the start, partly for functional reasons, I filled these surfaces with colour, art and wallpaper on the topic of, or about people that I wanted to express”, is how Raimund Brunmair explains his approach. “This is the most beautiful part of the design and it is intuitive, but it is influenced by background knowledge about material, colour theory, commodity economics etc. Senses are addressed and I also wanted to awaken that among the hotel guests”, Brunmair continued. Barbara Ludwig reveals even more: “During our Grätzl research we contacted institutions and came across people with whom we developed the storeys. Many ideas developed on the basis of historical knowledge, archived history and reproducible originals.”

By the way: Ludwig van Beethoven lived for two years in the rear wing of the Theater an der Wien opposite. And if you would like to visit Beethoven, you can do so every weekend for example at the chamber music concert of the Wiener Klassik for piano and cello!
